Putin Backs India in Fight Against Jihadi Terror

Putin Backs India in Fight Against Jihadi Terror

Russian President Vladimir Putin called Prime Minister Narendra Modi today to strongly condemn the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which 25 Indian tourists and a local Kashmiri resident were brutally killed. The Russian leader conveyed his deepest condolences and expressed unwavering support to India in its battle against terrorism.

The Kremlin confirmed that President Putin has accepted PM Modi’s invitation to visit India later this year for the Annual Summit. Both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening the strategic partnership between India and Russia, emphasizing that their ties remain immune to external influences and continue to grow dynamically.

"President Putin expressed full support to India in the fight against terrorism and stressed that those responsible for the heinous act must be held accountable," said Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, in a post on X.

Putin’s outreach comes just days after Pakistan floated the idea of an international investigation into the attack, suggesting involvement from Russia, China, or the West. Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, in an interview with Russian news agency RIA Novosti, called for an international inquiry to determine the “truth” behind the incident — a move widely viewed as an attempt to deflect blame.

India has firmly linked the attack to Pakistan-backed groups, with The Resistance Front, a known front for Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claiming responsibility.

Amid these tensions, Putin’s call to PM Modi underscores Moscow’s consistent support for New Delhi. Despite global pressures, India and Russia have maintained close ties — especially during the Ukraine conflict, where India continued energy trade with Moscow.

“Your relationship with me is such that we don’t even need translators,” Putin had told Modi during their 2023 meeting, highlighting their personal rapport.
