Maldives President Urges Indian Tourists to Return, Strengthening Ties

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, often viewed as having a 'pro-China' stance, affirmed his commitment to India’s security and underscored the long-standing partnership between the two nations during his first bilateral visit to New Delhi. Speaking to a national English daily, Muizzu expressed that Maldives sees India as a “valued partner and friend,” emphasizing that cooperation in various fields, including defense, will continue to be a priority. Despite some campaign rhetoric focused on removing Indian military personnel from Maldives, Muizzu stressed that the relationship with India is "built on respect and shared interests."

The Maldives, he said, would not engage in any actions that undermine India’s security, highlighting the island nation's balanced foreign policy approach under the 'Maldives First' policy. This policy seeks to diversify international relations and reduce reliance on any one country without compromising India’s interests. Although he did not mention China explicitly, his statement reflected a balanced diplomatic stance aimed at fostering growth and development through broader international collaboration.

Muizzu also addressed the recent controversies involving Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives, which had become a focal point of the 'India Out' movement. While the removal of Indian military staff fulfilled one of his electoral promises, he reiterated that the broader India-Maldives relationship remains strong, built on a shared history of mutual respect and cooperation. "The people of Maldives do not want foreign soldiers," Muizzu said, reflecting public sentiment while reaffirming India’s continued importance as a partner in regional stability.

Tourism, one of Maldives’ economic lifelines, took a hit following diplomatic tensions last year. Muizzu made a direct appeal to Indian tourists to return, acknowledging their positive contributions to the country's economy. Indian tourists have long been a crucial part of the Maldives' thriving tourism sector, and the president is eager to rebuild those numbers after the diplomatic row involving remarks by Maldivian ministers about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As a critical maritime neighbor, Maldives remains integral to India’s strategic interests in the Indian Ocean region. India’s collaboration with Maldives has seen significant progress, particularly in defense, security, and infrastructure projects, such as the Greater Male connectivity scheme. President Muizzu’s visit marks a step toward rebuilding trust and reinforcing the deep-rooted ties between the two nations.
