India Medal Tally Swells To 20 in Paralympics

India achieved its best-ever Paralympics medal haul, surpassing the previous record with a total of 20 medals (3 gold, 7 silver, 10 bronze) at the ongoing Games. This historic achievement was driven by outstanding performances in track and field events, particularly on day six, where Indian athletes added five more medals to the tally.

Javelin throwers Ajeet Singh and Sundar Singh Gurjar secured silver and bronze in the F46 category, with throws of 65.62m and 64.96m, respectively. In the T63 high jump finals, Sharad Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu claimed silver and bronze with jumps of 1.88m and 1.85m. Deepthi Jeevanji, a 20-year-old sprinter from Telangana, won bronze in the women's 400m (T20) event, clocking 55.82 seconds in her debut Games appearance.

Shooter Avani Lekhara, who had earlier won gold in the 10m air rifle, missed out on another medal in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions SH1, finishing fifth. Bhagyashri Jadhav ended fifth in the women's shot put (F34) with a throw of 7.28m, while archer Pooja Jatyan, despite a strong start, was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the recurve women's open event.

This remarkable performance has placed India 17th in the overall medal standings, showcasing the country's growing strength and determination in para sports.
